Two tower technicians fell to their deaths, May 28, while working on a tower in Georgetown, Miss. The men, identified as
Michael Castelli, 42, of Baton Rouge, La., and Johnny Martone, 32, of Taylorsville, Miss., were hoisting several panel antennas up a tower when an equipment failure caused them to fall.
“They were trying to get the boom into place so they could lift the antennas up, and something that held the boom up broke causing the men to plunge to their deaths,” Copiah County Sheriff Harold Jones told WLBT TV. “I think we had a catastrophic failure of the cable.”
The county coroner said the men were halfway up the 301-foot tower, which is owned by SBA Communications, when the incident occurred, according to WLBT.
The men were working for Byrd Telecom, which was subcontracting for a carrier. OSHA is investigating.
