March is Brain Injury Awareness month. That fact is not lost on Tommy Jeglum, a tower climber who continues to recover from injuries sustained in a fall from a cell tower, June 15, in Allentown, Pa. The community is coming together to raise money for the injured climber so he can move back into his home.
Jeglum had been on the job for a mere six weeks for Jacobs Engineering Group when he tied off on a section of a tower that could not support his weight. The resulting 50-foot fall left Jeglum with severe traumatic brain injuries and in a coma. Questions have been raised concerning the extent of Jeglum’s training.
Jeglum, whom doctors did not expect to come out of the coma, did awaken to a vegetative state after several months and gradually improved to the point at which he was able to marry his fiancé Regina Cornett last Christmas.
Today, Jeglum is recovering in brain rehab back in Sacramento, Calif. He has regained his ability to talk and his long-term memory, but has yet to get his short-term memory back. He is working on trying to support his body weight and hopes to go home soon. But he faces many challenges. One of those is modifying the house so that it is accessible.
Jeglum’s family and friends have started a fundraiser on a website called “You Caring” to try to raise money for a wheelchair ramp, an adjustable bed, shower modifications and a wheel chair. So far, more than $6,600 has been raised. To donate click here. The deadline is March 16.
