Yesterday’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling that the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects the rights of gay and transgender employees was applauded by Verizon, AT&T and others in the corporation wireless world.
“Today’s historic ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court is a victory for Verizon employees and millions of American workers,” the company said in a press release. “We fully support equality for LGBTQ+ individuals and have long advocated for these issues.
Verizon added that its commitment to (LGBTQ+) employees and their families is demonstrated through its policies, benefits and best practices. The corporation has received a 100 percent score on the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation 2020 Corporate Equality Index (CEI).
“That makes the best place to work for LGBTQ+ equality,” Verizon said. “We’re proud of our standing in this area and are pleased with today’s ruling.”
Last summer, AT&T joined more than 200 major companies in filing an amicus brief in support of this outcome, which outlined that no one should be passed over for a job, paid less, fired or subject to harassment due to their sexual orientation or gender identity.
“We agree with today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision and look forward to continuing to champion an inclusive culture that encourages, supports, and celebrates the diverse background of our employees and society.” said Corey Anthony, SVP & Chief Diversity Officer.
AT&T implemented policies in 1975 prohibiting discrimination against employees based on sexual orientation.
“We are a proud ally of the LGBTQ+ community and have long supported efforts to ensure employees feel safe, valued and heard,” the company said in a press release.
T-Mobile has long been recognized for its LGBTQ+ policies by the Corporate Equality Index (CEI), a national benchmarking survey and report on business policies and practices related to LGBTQ workplace equality that is administered by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.
T-Mobile currently has six diversity and inclusion employee network groups, including one specifically focused on supporting and advocating for the LGBTQ community.
