May 17, 2016 — On another small cell vector, femtocells, the ones usually found in homes, coffee shops, restaurants and the like are starting to move outside of these venues. Advancements in these products has the vendors targeting small and medium sized businesses (SMEs).
The reason for that is, largely, femtocells are integrating multiple technologies – not just Wi-Fi but LTE, and others as well. Femtocells have traditionally been targeted at the residential market as a way for regular wireless customers to improve the cellular coverage inside their homes.
However, chipsets like the Qualcomm FSM small cell VIVE Wi-Fi chipsets, which support both 2.5 GHz TD-LTE and 802.11ac technologies, concurrently means that such a small cell enables building owners improved wireless coverage through Sprint’s network and through Wi-Fi. As Analyst James Carlini says, Real estate’s new mantra is location, location, connectivity. And such technologies are rising to enable that.
