Barclay Knapp has been a telecommunications industry executive for 30 years. Most recently he has served as the Chairman and CEO of ProCapital Group, LLC, a management consulting & advisory group focused on developing, investing, and managing high-growth companies. Mr. Knapp is also the current President of Preferred Communication Systems, Inc.
Previously, Mr. Knapp was the co-founder and President of Cellular Communications, Inc. (Cellular One), the first cellular company in the U.S. to go public and one of the largest independent cellular system operators in the United States. Mr. Knapp facilitated the sale of Cellular Communications, Inc. to Airtouch (now Verizon) in 1996 for $3.3 billion. Mr. Knapp also co-founded Cellular Communications International, Inc., which was sold to Olivetti SpA and Mannesmann AG for $1.6 billion, and Cellular Communications of Puerto Rico, Inc., which was sold for $1.1 billion to SBC Communications.
In 1993, Mr. Knapp co-founded NTL, Inc. (now Virgin Media Inc.), and grew the company into what is now the largest cable and broadband provider in the UK. Mr. Knapp served as President and CEO of NTL until 2003. During his tenure with NTL the company achieved a peak market value of $59 billion.
In 1998, The Financial Times named him “Telecommunications Executive of the Year.”
Mr. Knapp earned a BA in Mathematics from The Johns Hopkins University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He is currently a Senior Fellow in the Center for Financial Economics at The Johns Hopkins University.
