Countries such as the United States have adopted mass surveillance programs to combat threats to national security, according to MarketsandMarkets, a research firm in Northbrook, Illinois. The global lawful interception market size is expected to grow by $3.5 billion in 2021 and to be worth $12.9 billion by 2026, at a compound annual growth rate of 29.3 percent during the forecast period, the firm said. It said the lawful interception market is growing because of the rapid adoption of advanced technologies.
“The emergence of smartphones, laptops, and smart gadgets helps the implementation of lawful interception across networks,” a statement from the company reads. “Lawful interception for mobile data is implemented in the core network of the operator. In an LTE network, a lawful interception management system (LIMS) directly interfaces with mobility management entity (MME) nodes for monitoring control plane data, and system architecture evolution and packet data network gateway elements for user plane data.”
The mobile network aids in the monitoring of real-time data from any wireless network, MarketsandMarkets said. It said 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G and other wireless access technologies such as WLAN and WiMAX are all part of the mobile network, and the mobile network integrates with most of the leading vendors in the lawful interception market.
According to MarketsandMarkets, government agencies, such as CIA and NSA in the United States, GCHQ in the United Kingdom, the Ministry of Home Affairs and CBI in India, MSS in China and PSIA of Japan, are among the few government agencies of several countries widely adopting lawful interception. For instance, MarketsandMarkets said, in India on Dec. 20, 2018, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued an order authorizing 10 security and intelligence agencies to intercept, monitor and decrypt any information in any computer resource in accordance with the Information Technology Act, 2000.
MarketsandMarkets said that the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region would grow the most in the lawful interception market.
“APAC is one of the fastest-growing economies due to the growing network technologies, digital infrastructure and smartphone and internet penetration,” the firm said. “These factors have stimulated the cases of cybercrimes by using social networks for subversive activities and terrorism in the region. Countries such as India, China and Japan contribute a major share to APAC’s economy. These countries are experiencing a major threat from hacker groups or terror networks with the increasing penetration of digital infrastructure and heavy investment in network technologies by key industry telecom players in the region. The use of social networks to influence netizens and give rise to crimes is one of the major factors that actuate the market for lawful interception in the region.”
Key and innovative vendors in the lawful interception market in the United States are Vocal Technologies, AqsaCom, Verint, Cisco, SS8 Networks, Accuris Networks, Elbit Systems, Signalogic, NetQuest and GL Communications, MarketsandMarkets said. Additional vendors are Utimaco in Germany, BAE Systems and Squire Technologies in the United Kingdom, Ericsson in Sweden, Matison in Croatia) Shoghi in India, Comint in Mexico, IPS in Italy, Tracespan and Septier Communications in Israel, Eve Compliancy Solutions in Netherlands, Incognito Software in Canada), ETSI and Atos in France and Trovicor in Dubai, the firm said.
