Network function virtualization (NFV), along with software-defined networks, is expected to make up the communications infrastructure going forward. According to Infonetics Research, the next five years will see a multi-fold increase in spending on these two areas.
By 2018, IR predicts revenue to be more than $11 billion, up from a paltry $500 million at the end of 2013. SDN and NFV software are projected to comprise three-fourths of the total revenues in 2018, according to IR.
In the next few months, expect to see the beginning of some operators move to actual commercial deployments of specific NFV use cases, but it won’t be until next year when commercial deployments begin to gain traction.
