April 7, 2015 — Over the top (OTT) technologies haven’t seen much press here, but that is going to change. OTT is beginning to become attractive to wireless operators in spite of the huge bandwidth demands. The carriers, including AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon are in that proverbial rock and hard place scenario, because content (mainly video) is gaining popularity at breakneck speeds. That means that these big MNOs are committed to making wireless OTT a “key pillar” of their future plans, according to a Wells Fargo Securities report (Can Wireless Capitalize On OTT–We Think So!)
The popularity of steaming video (mainly TVoD, SVoD, Netflix, etc.), with the millennial generation is making video a game-changing paradigm with these traditional operators, and they will have to get into the game if they want to keep on the wireless bullet train.
