The use of multiple input multiple output (MIMO) complicates the process of measuring eNodeB power and modulation quality in LTE systems. The difficulties include the fact that spectrum analyzers have just one receiver, while two or more receivers are needed for complete demodulation of data channels. Connecting directly to a transmitter is not necessarily the solution because of the use of “precoding” techniques or simply that the site is inaccessible. However, measuring the LTE control channels “over-the-air” can provide an excellent quick health indication of the transmitter performance and MIMO configuration.
