Carriers Pledge Support for Victims of Hurricane Harvey

By J. Sharpe Smith

In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, wireless carriers have stepped up with support as south Texas begins the long road to recovery.

Verizon committed $10 million toward relief efforts through The Greater Houston Community Foundation-Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund for Houston, the One Star Foundation, and the Salvation Army Southern Territory.

“In the coming days, we’ll also be deploying our Wireless Emergency Communication Centers, which are generator-powered mobile units on tractor trailers that have device charging and computer workstations, as well as wireless phones, tablets and other devices for residents to contact friends and family over our reliable network,” said Lowell McAdam, CEO, Verizon, in a blog post.

In addition, Verizon is giving its 10,000 employees in Texas up to a week of paid volunteer time to help with the recovery efforts.

Sprint and SoftBank committed $2.5 million to support employees, the Red Cross and the communities affected by storm. Additionally, Sprint employees set up a GoFundMe campaign to directly fund recovery and restoration efforts for those employees left struggling in Harvey’s wake.

AT&T Pledges $350,000 in Aid

AT&T is donating $350,000 to aid communities following Hurricane Harvey, which includes $100,000 to the Greater Houston Community Fund, $100,000 to the American Red Cross Hurricane Harvey Fund and $50,000 to the Coastal Bend Community Foundation in South Texas.

“We have disaster recovery teams in place to keep our customers connected, and we’re working around the clock to help our communities in Texas and Louisiana through this crisis,” said Charlene Lake, AT&T Chief Sustainability Officer.

AT&T waived fees for customers that were impacted by Harvey, from Aug. 26 through at least Sept. 1. Additionally, the AT&T Foundation will match employee donations up to $50,000 each to the AT&T Employee Disaster Relief Fund, which supports thousands of AT&T employees who live in the areas affected by the storms and Team Rubicon, a disaster response veterans service organization.

To further assist Texas and Louisiana customers affected by Harvey, T-Mobile is offering unlimited data to those who are not already on an unlimited data plan from Aug. 28-Sept. 8 to get updates on storm activity and stay in touch with family/friends on social media.
