Just as AT&T put out news it was on track to roll out VoLTE later this year, not to be outdone, Verizon said it, too, is going to roll out VoLTE this year. Hmmm, I think I’ll start a lottery and whomever picks the first player to roll it out gets a free year of VoLTE on the system of their choice. Actually, from what I gleaned, it seems that Verizon has a bit better of a chance of making the bigger splash.
The AT&T roll is going to be in a few states in the Midwest, whereas Verizon has a much better footprint of LTE across the country. So it seems they have a better deployment metric than AT&T. On the other hand, AT&T seems ahead in the handset race with a VoLTE version of the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini. Verizon hasn’t mentioned much about handsets, although they did say that some of its current LTE-enabled models will be VoLTE-enabled through a software update. And don’t forget that Verizon didn’t make the 2013 rollout of VoLTE as it had originally planned.
So the VoLTE waters still seem cloudy. IMHO, as much posturing as has been going on around VoLTE, I’m really not sure we are going to see any excitable deployments this year.
